Things to do
The museums. Matisse and Chagall in Cimiez, the MAMAC and its modern and contemporary art near place Garibaldi, the Masséna museum on the Promenade for the history of the city, the Fine Arts museum, the villa Arson. Nice has some fifteen municipal museums, most of them free.
The Carnival and the festivities. The Nice Carnival, in February, with its parades and battles of flowers on the Promenade; Nice Jazz Festival in July; the Saint-Pierre festival at the port; the 14 July fireworks over the bay. Book early on those days: the Promenade is closed in sections.
Niçois food. Socca, pissaladière, salade niçoise, petits farcis, daube, pan bagnat: Niçois cooking has its own label, Cuisine Nissarde, and its addresses in the old town, at the port and in the markets. The starred tables are on the Promenade and in the hills.
The sea. Swimming on the pebble beaches, boat trips from the port to Villefranche, Cap Ferrat and Monaco, diving and paddle-boarding, and the ferries to Corsica.
The surroundings. Villefranche, Èze, Saint-Paul, Monaco, Antibes or Menton are less than an hour away: each has its own fare from Nice, on the route pages, with the same airport pick-up as an option.
Shopping and markets. Avenue Jean-Médecin and its department stores, rue Paradis and the pedestrian zone for the brands, the old town for crafts, and the markets: cours Saleya, Libération, place Saint-François for fish.
When to come
Winter
The season Nice was invented for: mild weather, light, the Carnival in February, museums without queues and hotels at their best prices. The terraces of the Promenade are full in the midday sun.
Spring
The first swims in May, the hills in bloom, the markets at their peak. The ideal time, before the summer crowds.
Summer
The beaches, Nice Jazz Festival, evenings at the port and in the old town. The city is full; plan your rides early in the morning or book ahead, the Promenade is busy in the late afternoon.
Autumn
Warm water until October, golden light on the bay, free terraces and a city handed back to its residents. Nice returns to its rhythm in September.
