Villefranche-sur-Mer at first light: the coloured façades of the harbour and the bay

Villefranche-sur-Mer, the bay and the old town

Just behind Mont Boron, a quarter of an hour from Nice, Villefranche is a 14th-century fishing harbour left almost untouched: coloured façades stacked above the water, stairway lanes, a Savoyard citadel and a bay so deep that the largest cruise ships anchor in it. It is the village of the coast closest to Nice, and one of the most photographed.

Things to do

  • The Saint-Pierre chapel. The fishermen's chapel on the quay, decorated from floor to vault by Jean Cocteau in 1957. Twenty minutes, and one of the most singular places on the coast. Closed on Mondays and at lunchtime.
  • The rue Obscure and the old town. A 130-metre vaulted passage under the houses, a 13th-century covered street, then the stairway lanes up to the Saint-Michel church and its 18th-century organ.
  • The citadel and its museums. Built by the Duke of Savoy in 1557: ramparts, gardens and three free museums, including the Volti foundation with its bronze figures in the casemates.
  • Cap Ferrat, on foot or by car. Across the bay, the peninsula of the grand villas: the coastal path, the Ephrussi de Rothschild villa and its gardens, Passable beach facing Villefranche. Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat has its own fare from Nice.
  • The sea. Diving and snorkelling in the bay, one of the richest sites on the coast; boat trips to the Cap and Beaulieu from the port de la Santé; kayaking from Les Marinières.
  • The Combat naval fleuri. Every year since 1902, in February or March, the decorated fishing boats fight with carnations and mimosa in front of quai Courbet: the oldest and merriest festival of Villefranche.

When to come

Winter

The village for its residents, terraces in the midday sun, sharp light on the façades. The Combat naval fleuri in February or March livens up the harbour for a day.

Spring

The best time: a calm bay, first swims in May, the gardens of the Cap in bloom, cruise ships still rare. The lanes are yours in the morning.

Summer

The beaches, evenings on the quay, daily cruise-ship calls. The old town is full between 10 am and 5 pm; plan the pick-up early in the morning or at the end of the day.

Autumn

Warm water until October, golden light on the bay, free terraces. Ship calls become rare in November and the harbour gets its fishermen back.

The ride from Nice

About ten kilometres separate Nice from Villefranche. I go through the port of Nice then along the Basse Corniche, which skirts Mont Boron above the sea and opens onto the bay: the view on arrival is the finest way into Villefranche. At rush hour, the Moyenne Corniche via the col de Villefranche avoids the seafront. No tolls. On arrival, I drop you at the exact address of your choice: hotel, harbour, station, beach, or the old town as close as possible to the pedestrian lanes.

To Nice

The return: Villefranche-sur-Mer → Nice

Same €40 fixed fare the other way, to Nice city centre or the airport, no surcharge. Recommended pick-up: Villefranche-sur-Mer railway station, your hotel or any address in town.
