Antibes: the ramparts of the old town at the water's edge, the Alps in the distance

Antibes, the old town, the Cap and Juan-les-Pins

Antibes is three towns in one: the walled city, with its market, its castle turned Picasso museum and its ramparts set on the sea; the Cap, a peninsula of pines and grand villas ringed by the coastal path; and Juan-les-Pins, the resort of fine sand and jazz born in the 1920s. Between Nice and Cannes, a few minutes from the airport, it is the most complete destination on the coast for a stay on foot.

Things to do

  • The Picasso museum. In the Grimaldi castle on the ramparts, the first museum in the world devoted to Picasso, who worked there in autumn 1946. Closed on Mondays; keep the terrace, with its sculptures facing the sea, for the end.
  • The Provençal market. Under the iron hall of cours Masséna, every morning in summer and every morning except Monday the rest of the year: producers, flowers, goat's cheese, olives, socca. Come before 10 am.
  • The coastal path of the Cap. From La Garoupe beach, the old customs officers' path goes round the tip of the Cap between rocks, coves and the walls of the great estates: five kilometres, two hours, as far as the Eilenroc villa. Closed in rough seas.
  • Jazz à Juan. Since 1960, the Gould pine grove hosts the biggest names in jazz in July, facing the sea. Book seats and transfer as soon as the programme is announced.
  • The Fort Carré and Port Vauban. The 16th-century star fort on its peninsula, guided visits only, and below it the largest marina in Europe with the quai des Milliardaires. The walk round the harbour gives the classic view of the old town and the Alps.
  • Biot and Vallauris, ten minutes away. The glassworks of Biot and the Fernand Léger museum; the potters of Vallauris and Picasso's War and Peace chapel. On request from Antibes.

When to come

Winter

The old town for itself, the market in the morning, the ramparts with the snow-capped Alps opposite. Hotels are at their lowest and the Cap path is deserted.

Spring

The Eilenroc rose garden in May, the Voiles d'Antibes regatta in June, the sea warm enough from late May at La Gravette. The best time to walk the Cap.

Summer

Jazz à Juan in July, the beaches, the evenings on the harbour and in Juan-les-Pins. The town is full; plan the pick-up early in the morning, when the motorway is clear.

Autumn

Water still warm until October, market in full season of figs and mushrooms, soft light on the ramparts. Juan-les-Pins empties and the old town gets its residents back.

The ride from Nice

Some twenty kilometres separate Nice from Antibes. I take the A8 motorway to the Antibes exit, then the road drops down to the harbour and the old town: the fastest and most reliable route, away from the seafront traffic between Cagnes-sur-Mer and Villeneuve-Loubet. Tolls are included in the fare. On arrival, I drop you at the exact address of your choice: hotel, harbour, station, Juan-les-Pins, the Cap, or the old town as close as possible to the pedestrian lanes.

To Nice

The return: Antibes → Nice

Same €50 fixed fare the other way, to Nice city centre or the airport, no surcharge. Recommended pick-up: Antibes railway station, your hotel or any address in town.
