Cap-d'Ail: the coastal path, the villas among the pines and Monaco in the distance

Cap-d'Ail, the coast at the gates of Monaco

Wedged between the cliff of the Tête de Chien and the sea, on the border with Monaco, Cap-d'Ail is a Belle Époque winter resort turned quiet residential town: villas among the pines, a harbour, a sandy beach, a famous cove, and a coastal path linking them all at the water's edge. It is the place to sleep in peace ten minutes' walk from the Rock, and one of the finest seafront walks on the coast.

Things to do

  • Monaco on foot. From Marquet beach, the port of Fontvieille, the Louis-II stadium and the Rock are ten minutes' walk along the seafront: the Oceanographic Museum, the palace and the Saint-Martin gardens without driving into the Principality. Monaco has its own fare from Nice.
  • La Turbie and the Trophy of Augustus. Above the cliff, on the Grande Corniche, the village of La Turbie and its Roman monument of 6 BC, a quarter of an hour by car, with the Tête de Chien viewpoint on the way. On request from Cap-d'Ail.
  • Èze, ten minutes away. The hilltop village and its exotic garden, by the Moyenne Corniche. Èze has its own fare from Nice, or I drop you there from Cap-d'Ail on request.
  • The sea. Diving and snorkelling from the Mala and the coves along the path, on some of the clearest seabeds on the coast; kayaking and paddle-boarding from Marquet in calm seas; boat trips from the harbour.
  • Food. The beach restaurants of the Mala, the terraces of the harbour, and, five minutes away, all the tables of Monaco, from the Condamine to the palaces of the Casino square.
  • The cultural centre and the exhibitions. The château des Terrasses hosts exhibitions and concerts all year round; the amphithéâtre de la Mer, on the seafront, stages open-air shows in summer.

When to come

Winter

The season Cap-d'Ail was created for: mild weather, a deserted path, villas in the low light, Monaco close by for the museums. The Mala restaurants are closed.

Spring

The path at its best, the first swims in the coves from May, the Mala reopening. Beware of the Grand Prix weeks, in late May or early June: traffic around Monaco is difficult.

Summer

The beaches, the Mala, evenings on the harbour, the shows at the amphitheatre. Plan the pick-up early in the morning, when the Basse Corniche and the motorway are clear.

Autumn

Warm water until October, golden light on the cliff, a pleasant path until November. The Monaco Yacht Show, in late September, fills the hotels of Cap-d'Ail.

The ride from Nice

Some twenty kilometres separate Nice from Cap-d'Ail. I take the A8 motorway to the Monaco exit, then the road drops down from La Turbie to Cap-d'Ail, with the view over the Principality and the sea: the fastest and most reliable route, away from the traffic on the Basse Corniche. Tolls are included in the fare. On request, I take the Grande Corniche and stop at the Tête de Chien viewpoint. On arrival, I drop you at the exact address of your choice: hotel, villa, station, harbour or beach.

To Nice

The return: Cap-d'Ail → Nice

Same €65 fixed fare the other way, to Nice city centre or the airport, no surcharge. Recommended pick-up: Cap-d'Ail railway station, your hotel or any address in town.
