Monaco at dusk: the Rock and Port Hercule

Monaco, the Rock, Monte-Carlo and the harbour

Two square kilometres between the mountains and the sea, and two faces: the Rock, with the palace, the cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum, where the Principality keeps the look of a fortified village; and Monte-Carlo, with the casino, the palaces and the shop windows, around Port Hercule and its yachts. Everything is done on foot, by public lifts and stairways, from one level of the town to the next.

Things to do

  • The palace and the changing of the guard. The Grimaldi residence since the 13th century; the State Apartments open from April to mid-October. Every day at 11:55 am, the Carabiniers du Prince change guard on the square.
  • The Oceanographic Museum. Founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I on the edge of the cliff: aquariums, the shark lagoon, whale skeletons, and the roof terrace. Allow two hours; book online to skip the queue.
  • The Casino square. The 1863 casino and its opera house by Charles Garnier, the Hôtel de Paris, the Café de Paris. The salons can be visited in the morning; the gaming rooms open in the afternoon, ID required.
  • The Grand Prix circuit, on foot. The track runs through the streets all year round: the climb to the Casino, the Fairmont hairpin, the tunnel, the harbour chicane, the Rascasse. One hour on foot.
  • The Prince's car collection. On Port Hercule since 2022: some hundred cars, from the first automobiles to Formula 1 cars. One hour, even for non-enthusiasts.
  • La Turbie and the Tête de Chien. On the heights above Monaco, a quarter of an hour by car: the Roman Trophy of Augustus and the viewpoint from which the whole Principality fits in one gaze. On request from Monaco.

When to come

Winter

The Monte-Carlo Rally and the International Circus Festival in January, mild weather, hotels at their best prices and museums without queues. The Rock is quiet, the light is sharp.

Spring

The season of the big events: the tennis tournament in April, the Historic and Formula E Grands Prix, then Formula 1 in late May or early June, when the whole town becomes a circuit. Rooms and transfers are booked months ahead on those weeks.

Summer

Larvotto beach, fireworks over the harbour, open-air concerts. The heat is tempered by the sea; plan the pick-up early in the morning, when the motorway and the entrances to Monaco are clear.

Autumn

The Monaco Yacht Show in late September, the sea still warm until October, the national day on 19 November with fireworks over the harbour. After October, the Principality returns to its rhythm and its winter prices.

The ride from Nice

Some twenty kilometres separate Nice from Monaco. I take the A8 motorway to the Monaco exit, then the road drops down to the Principality from La Turbie, with the view over the Rock, the harbour and Monte-Carlo: the fastest and most reliable route, away from the traffic on the Basse Corniche. Tolls are included in the fare. On arrival, I drop you at the exact address of your choice: hotel, harbour, station, or the Rock as close as possible to the authorised access points.

To Nice

The return: Monaco → Nice

Same €65 fixed fare the other way, to Nice city centre or the airport, no surcharge. Recommended pick-up: Monaco-Monte-Carlo railway station, your hotel or any address in town.

Questions about this ride

Does the ride use the motorway?

Yes: the A8 motorway to the Monaco exit, then the descent to the Principality by the La Turbie road, with the view over the Rock and the harbour. Tolls are included in the fare.

Do I need papers to enter Monaco?

No: there is no border control between France and Monaco. Just remember an ID if you want to enter the casino's gaming rooms.

Can you drop me on the Rock or at the Casino square?

The Rock is closed to visitors' cars: I drop you at the Pêcheurs car park (lift to the Oceanographic Museum) or at place de la Visitation. At the Casino square, access is regulated: I drop you in front of your hotel or as close as possible to the authorised access. The fare does not change.

And during the Grand Prix?

The circuit is built on the streets of Monaco for several weeks and roads are closed on race days. I drop you as close as possible to your destination and show you the way. Book early: slots go fast on those days.

Do you also do Monaco → Nice?

Yes, at the same fare of €65 incl. VAT, to Nice centre or to the airport, with no airport surcharge. Use the page Your town → Nice and choose Monaco.

How long does it take?

The duration depends on the departure time and the traffic at the entrances to Monaco, busy in the morning and late afternoon. I give you a precise estimate in the confirmation email, based on your schedule.
