Saint-Laurent-du-Var: the sailing boats of the harbour at sunrise, the mouth of the Var and the mountains

Saint-Laurent-du-Var, across the river

Just past the Var, opposite the airport, Saint-Laurent-du-Var is the old border town between Provence and the County of Nice, now a seaside town with its marina, its beaches, its sunset promenade and, since 2019, the largest shopping centre in the region. Ten minutes from the terminals, it is the shortest fare on the list from the airport, and a good base for a stopover or an early flight.

Things to do

  • The harbour and the sea. The marina, its restaurants and its boat trips; the breakwater to watch the planes and the sailing boats; the sailing club for sailing and paddle-boarding. Cycling along the sea to Antibes, on the flat.
  • Shopping. Cap 3000 and its three hundred shops, but also the shops of the old town and the Tuesday and Friday market. The region's shopping destination, five minutes from the airport.
  • Nice, opposite. The Promenade des Anglais starts on the other side of the bridge: the centre of Nice, the old town and the port are twenty minutes away. Nice → Nice has its own fare, or I drop you there from Saint-Laurent on request.
  • The villages of the Var valley. Carros and its medieval village, Gattières, Saint-Jeannet and its baou, a quarter of an hour up the river. Carros and Saint-Jeannet have their own fares from Nice.
  • Food. The fish restaurants of the harbour, the terraces of the promenade des Flots-Bleus at sunset, and the restaurants of Cap 3000 facing the sea.
  • Cagnes-sur-Mer, five minutes away. Cros-de-Cagnes and the racecourse, Haut-de-Cagnes and the Renoir museum, right next door. Cagnes has its own fare from Nice.

When to come

Winter

The sharpest sunsets of the year over the bay, the harbour terraces in the sun, hotels at their best prices for a stopover. Cap 3000 for rainy days.

Spring

The first swims in May, the promenade and the cycle path in the light, the Var valley in bloom. The best time for cycling.

Summer

The beaches, the harbour in the evening, concerts on the promenade. Plan the pick-up early in the morning, when the Promenade des Anglais and the Var bridge are clear.

Autumn

Warm water until October, golden light on the bay, free terraces. Saint-Laurent returns to its rhythm in September.
