Saint-Raphaël, the harbour and the corniche d'Or

At the western end of the Esterel, Saint-Raphaël is a seaside resort born in the 19th century around its old harbour and its Byzantine basilica, with a sandy beach in the town centre and, over thirty kilometres to the east, the whole corniche d'Or: Boulouris, the Dramont and its island, Agay, Anthéor, the Trayas, a succession of red-rock coves in a turquoise sea. An hour from Nice, it is the most distant destination on the list, and one of the most spectacular.

Things to do

  • The sea. Diving on the drop-offs of the Esterel and the wrecks of the bay, one of the best sites on the coast; kayaking and paddle-boarding to the Lion de mer and the calanques; boat trips to Saint-Tropez, the calanques of Anthéor and the île d'Or from the old harbour.
  • Walking in the Esterel. The cap Roux and its peak, the rocher Saint-Barthélemy, the pic de l'Ours: waymarked trails from Agay and Anthéor, with views over the whole coast to Saint-Tropez and the Alps. In the morning, outside the hot hours.
  • Fréjus, next door. The Roman town, its cathedral and its cloister, Port-Fréjus, ten minutes away by the seafront. Fréjus has its own fare from Nice.
  • The gulf of Saint-Tropez. Forty minutes by road, or by boat from the old harbour in summer: Saint-Tropez, Sainte-Maxime, Port-Grimaud. On request from Saint-Raphaël.
  • Festivities and heritage. On 15 August, the commemoration of the Provence landings at the Dramont; the Saint-Pierre festival on the harbour in July; the jazz nights and the summer fireworks; and the archaeological museum, in the old town, for the ancient wrecks of the bay.
  • Food. The fish restaurants of the old harbour and the promenade, the tables of Agay facing the bay, the beach restaurants of Boulouris, and the market on place Victor-Hugo every morning.

When to come

Winter

The season Saint-Raphaël was created for: mild weather, the corniche d'Or without traffic, the Esterel in sharp light, hotels at their best prices. The season for walkers.

Spring

The maquis in bloom, the first swims in the sheltered coves from May, the sea still calm for kayaking. The best time for the corniche.

Summer

The beaches, the harbour in the evening, the fireworks, 15 August at the Dramont. The A8 is busy on Saturdays; plan the pick-up early in the morning or on a weekday.

Autumn

Warm water until October, red light on the Esterel, the corniche handed back to its residents. Saint-Raphaël returns to its rhythm in September.

The ride from Nice

Seventy kilometres separate Nice from Saint-Raphaël. I take the A8 motorway all the way, through the Esterel, to the Fréjus / Saint-Raphaël exit, then the centre, Boulouris or Agay depending on your address: the fastest and most reliable route. Tolls are included in the fare. On request, the corniche d'Or along the seafront from Théoule, longer and spectacular. On arrival, I drop you at the exact address of your choice: hotel, station, harbour, beach or villa on the corniche.
