Villeneuve-Loubet, the Marina, the beach and the village

Between Cagnes and Antibes, Villeneuve-Loubet is first of all a seafront: four kilometres of beaches, a cycle path and the pyramids of the Marina Baie des Anges, one of the most famous buildings on the coast, with their harbour and their terraces. Then, three kilometres inland, a medieval village at the foot of its castle, on the banks of the Loup, where Auguste Escoffier was born. Ten minutes from the airport, it is the practical destination for a seaside stay close to everything.

Things to do

  • The Escoffier museum of culinary art. In the chef's birthplace, in the village: his menus, his utensils, a reconstructed Provençal kitchen, the collection of menus from Europe's palaces and the story of the peach Melba. A delicious hour, to combine with lunch in the village.
  • The Vaugrenier park. A hundred hectares of pine forest, meadows and a pond, between the Marina and Antibes: walking, jogging, picnics, birdwatching. The green lung of the seafront, free access.
  • Cycling along the sea. The cycle path links the Marina to Cagnes-sur-Mer and Saint-Laurent-du-Var on one side, Antibes on the other, on the flat, with the sea all the way. Hire at the Marina or at Cros-de-Cagnes.
  • Antibes and Cagnes, ten minutes away. The old town of Antibes and its Picasso museum on one side, Haut-de-Cagnes and the Renoir museum on the other. Each has its own fare from Nice, or I drop you there from Villeneuve-Loubet on request.
  • Food. The restaurants of the Marina harbour, the tables of the village around the square, the beach restaurants in summer, and, in the hills, the inns of the Loup valley.
  • The gorges du Loup. Up the river, twenty minutes away, the gorges, their waterfalls and the hilltop villages of Tourrettes-sur-Loup and Gourdon: half a day of hinterland from the seafront, on request.

Winter

The beach facing the snow-capped Alps, walks in Vaugrenier, the Marina hotels at their best prices. The season for quiet stays near the airport.

Spring

The park and the Loup valley in bloom, the first swims in May, the cycle path in the light. The best time to combine sea and village.

Summer

The beaches, the Marina harbour in the evening, the night markets. The seafront is busy in the late afternoon; plan the pick-up early in the morning, when the motorway is clear.

Autumn

Warm water until October, golden light on the pyramids, a quiet village. Villeneuve-Loubet gets its rhythm and its winter prices back in September.
