Vence, the walled town and the Matisse chapel
At the foot of the baous, ten kilometres from the sea, Vence is a complete medieval town within its oval ramparts, a former bishop's seat with the smallest cathedral in France, and a town of artists: Matisse built his chapel here, Chagall left a mosaic, Dufy, Soutine and Gombrowicz lived here. Less visited than its neighbour Saint-Paul, it is a real town with its markets, its shops and its terraces, twenty minutes from Nice.
